As well as being one of Rome’s most beautiful neighbourhoods, Trastevere is, geographically speaking, one of the best starting points for anyone wishing to explore the city on two wheels.

From the Rome for You office at Via di San Calisto 9, you can reach the Gianicolo in just a few minutes – the panoramic terrace offering views across the whole of Rome, without queues and without paying for parking. This is an advantage that car users usually don’t consider, at least until they find themselves stuck in a traffic jam along the Lungotevere.

As for the ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone), the matter is simpler than it seems. Trastevere’s daytime ZTL is in force from Monday to Saturday from 6.30 am to 10.00 am and applies exclusively to cars, as motorbikes and scooters have free access to Rome’s ZTL all day and all night, without special permits, as confirmed by Roma Mobilità.

The night-time ZTL, in operation on Fridays and Saturdays from 9.30 pm to 3.00 am, with a summer extension to Wednesdays and Thursdays, also does not apply to two-wheeled vehicles. In practice, on a Vespa you can go anywhere, anytime.

From Trastevere, the historic centre is literally within easy reach. The Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori – distances that, by car, feel like a maze of one-way streets and impossible-to-find parking spaces, but which, on a Vespa, can be covered in a matter of minutes.

It is no coincidence that Romans wishing to cross the city centre still prefer two wheels today, despite everything.

The fleet: Vespa Primavera 125 and Vespa GTS 300

Vespa Primavera 125 — for those who want Rome all to themselves

The Primavera 125 is the Vespa in the most classic sense of the word. Lightweight, manoeuvrable, with a design that has remained timeless from the 1960s to the present day. To ride it, you need an A1 licence; alternatively, for those who already hold a B licence and are over 18, no additional qualification is required — Italian law allows you to ride motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW with a car licence alone.

It’s the ideal vehicle for those who want to explore the city centre, hop from one museum to another, and reach Villa Borghese on one side and the EUR on the other, without ever feeling out of place in the traffic. Compact dimensions, maximum agility, perfect for those who’ve never ridden a scooter before: trust us, it’s a vehicle you’ll feel at home on from the very first minutes.

Vespa GTS 300 — for those who want to get out of the city

The GTS 300 is in a league of its own. With its 300cc engine, it’s the perfect choice for those who don’t want to stop at the Ring Road. A morning in the Castelli Romani: Frascati, Marino, Lake Castel Gandolfo – all easily reached on the GTS: country roads, a few climbs, views that Rome itself doesn’t offer. Or towards Ostia Antica, along the coastal road, with the chance to end up on the beach.

To ride it, you need an A licence (for those who have held an A2 for at least two years, or an A licence obtained directly from the age of 24) or an A2 licence. Those with only a B licence cannot ride it, as the GTS exceeds the permitted engine capacity and power limits for a standard car licence. In any case, Rome for You will check the necessary documentation for you at the time of booking.

3 Vespa Tour starting from Trastevere

1. The grand tour of the viewpoints

The route starts from Via di San Calisto, climbs up to the Gianicolo for the first panoramic stop, and from there leads to the Fontanone, offering a breathtaking view over the whole of Rome, with St Peter’s dome towering above it all. Head down towards Trastevere, cross Ponte Sisto, then climb back up to Piazza del Campidoglio. From there, the Imperial Forums, the Circus Maximus, the Aventine Hill and the famous Keyhole, offering the perfect view of St Peter’s dome. Half a day – that is, the 4-hour option – is more than enough.

2. The Castelli Romani in a day

For this, you’ll need the GTS 300 and at least a full day. Head out of Rome towards the south-east; the Appia Nuova is the most direct route, and in 40 minutes you’ll already be amongst the villas and vineyards of the Alban Hills. Frascati for a glass of white wine, Lake Castel Gandolfo, Nemi with its wild strawberries that are everywhere in summer. An itinerary that Romans themselves rarely take, and which tourists almost always discover by chance.

3. The Via Appia Antica

One of the most unique routes you can take in Rome, and one that’s almost impossible to drive along: the Via Appia Antica, in the sections still paved with the original Roman cobblestones. From Trastevere, head towards Porta San Sebastiano, enter the Appia Antica Regional Park, and from there onwards you’ll find tombs, catacombs, umbrella pines and that feeling of having left the city whilst still being within Rome. Best done on a Sunday morning, when the road is closed to motorised traffic and hire scooters, following the guides’ instructions, are allowed access.
